FOOT ORTHOSES

1.  Start wearing the Foot Orthoses (FOs) until your feet get a general feeling or tiredness.  Most Important: DO NOT persevere.  If you have pain, you may have worn the FOs too long, or they may need adjustments.

2.  Gradually increase your wearing time daily as is comfortable, over the next 2 weeks.

3.  DO NOT exercise with the FOs within the 2 week break-in period.

4.  Watch for red marks on your feet.  If red marks persist longer than half an hour after removal of the orthosis call your orthotist immediately for an appointment, at 1-866-829-2969.  The foot orthoses are very easy to adjust as necessary for your comfort.

5.  The FOs may be washed under running water, with a damp soapy cloth.  Make sure all the soap is washed off, and dry with a towel.

6.  DO NOT immerse in water, or use HOT water.  Anything too hot for your hand is too hot for the FOs.

7.  DO NOT place near any heat source.

8.  Check the Foot Orthoses regularly for wear and tear.  Call your orthotist immediately for an appointment, at 1-866-829-2969 if the orthosis is in need of repair.  DO NOT ATTEMPT HOME REPAIRS.

PLASTIC ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSIS (AFO)

1.  Start by wearing your AFO for 1 hour at a time throughout the first day.  Each time you remove the AFO, also remove your sock and check for red marks.  If red marks persist for longer than half an hour after removal of the orthosis, call your orthotist immediately for an appointment at 1-866-829-2969.

2.  On the 2nd day, wear the AFO for 2 hours at a time, and on the 3rd day, 3 hours at a time, etc., until you are able to wear the AFO for as long as you like.   This period usually takes 2 weeks.

3.  Always wear a shoe over your AFO unless it has a full sole of rubber on the bottom.

4.  For your own safety DO NOT DRIVE A VEHICLE while wearing your AFO.

5.  Plastic orthoses may be cleaned by wiping them inside and out with a damp soapy cloth.  Make sure all of the soap is wiped out of the orthosis.  Dry with a towel.  Drying with a hair dryer is not recommended.  Care should be taken not to get the straps or metal rivets wet.  The inner surface and pads can also be disinfected with rubbing alcohol.

6.  Leather-lined orthoses : The outer plastic may be cleaned as above.  The Leather liner may be sprinkled lightly with baby powder to keep it fresh.  If  the leather should get soiled, it may be wiped with a damp cloth.  If a deeper cleaning is needed, saddle soap may be used on the leather.

7.  Check the orthosis regularly for cracks or defects.  Call your orthotist immediately for an appointment, at 1-866-829-2969 if the orthosis is in need of repair.  DO NOT ATTEMPT HOME REPAIRS.

8.  REMINDER: The orthosis has been designed to reduce your symptoms.  Your follow-up appointment is an important part of your care to assure your comfort.
