Multiple Sclerosis

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Chronic condition involving your central nervous system

MS is a complicated disease that affects the nerves in the brain and the spinal cord. The nerves are covered in a myelin sheath that is attacked in people who have MS, resulting in disruption or impairment of the nervous system. MS can affect vision, hearing, balance and mobility. MS is diagnosed by medical doctors and often takes time to identify, often by means of clinical assessment and diagnostics such as MRI and nerve studies. There are many different treatments for MS and your physician will recommend the one that is appropriate for you.

Signs & Symptoms

what you may experience

Symptoms of MS vary greatly from person to person and may include: bowel and bladder dysfunction, dizziness, incoordination, impaired speech and swallowing, muscle weakness, dry mouth, cognitive impairment, depression, numbness and tingling. Not all people will have all symptoms and the symptoms sometimes change during periods of remission.

When MS affects your ability to pick up your toes or causes drop foot, an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) may be a solution to help make your walking safer and more efficient.

We are here for you every step of the way

Treatments

An AFO (ankle foot orthosis) can make your walking safer by helping you lift up the foot to clear the ground as the leg swings forward, and increases your stability by supporting the leg as it touches the ground again in support of your body weight.  Knee stability can also be improved with the use of an AFO, by controlling the hyperextension of your knee.
